Rawa fish fry with red cabbage salad

Fresh rohu fish pieces marinated with flavorful spices coated with semolina to give a crunchy crust makes a wonderful starter or a side dish. Here I have served it with red cabbage salad to compliment the fish.

  • 500 gms Rohu fish pieces
  • 2 tsps of turmeric powder (haldi)
  • 2 tsps red chilli powder(paprika)
  • 1 tbsp of salt
  • juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1tsp garam masala
  • semolina (Rawa) to coat the fish
  • mustard oil for frying

For the salad:

  • 1 cup  of shredded red cabbage
  • 1 onion sliced
  • juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste
  • chopped corander leaves to garnish

  • Wash and clean the fish pieces well.Drain the excess water and add in all the spices and lemon juice except semolina.Coat the fish pieces well with the spices and let it rest for about 15 mins.
  • In a plate, spread 3-4 tbsps of semolina or rawa and coat each side of the fish pieces.Tap of the excess rawa making sure all sides are coated the pieces in another plate for frying.
  • Heat a pan and 3-4 tbsps of mustard oil. Once the oil is heated add in the fish pieces one by one making sure not to overcrowd the pieces.Cook the pieces each side for about 5 mins until fully cooked.
  • Remove from the pan and place onto a paper towel to soak up the excess oil.

To make the salad: In a bowl add in all the ingredients and toss then gently.

Serve the rawa fish fry on the bed of salad or simply on the side.

p.s: increase or reduce the amount of spices according to taste preferences.
