Masoor Pulao

Easy wholesome one pot meal , sure to be loved by all those who love pulaos,
biryanis in any form.Variations can be made by adding veggies but i kept it
simple by just using saboot masoor and potatoes. This yummy dish can be enjoyed
with chilled cucumber raita or just as it is.


  • khada masala( 1 bay leaf, 3 cloves,1 cinnamon stick,1 black cardamomand 2 green cardamoms crushed. 4 whole peppercorns, 1 star anise)
  • 1 cup masoor (black lentils) soaked overnight or for 4-5 hrs
  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • water as required
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp garam masala powder
  • 1 tbsp cumin-coriander powder
  • 2 large onions sliced
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 large tomato chopped
  • 1 cup coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsps ghee(clarified butter)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 slit green chilli or as per your preference
  • 2 cubed potatoes


Soak whole masoor overnight or for 4-5 hours. Drain the water and keep aside.Soak
basmati rice for 30 minutes.
In a biryani pot or a heavy bottomed nonstick pan add in oil and ghee.Add in the whole
spices and saute until fragrant.Toss in sliced onions and fry until golden brown.
Add in ginger garlic paste and slit green chillies.Fry for a while and add in 2 tbsps
of water to reduce the heat.Add in all the dry spices, turmeric powder,red chilli
powder,garam masala and cumin coriander powder. saute and add in tomatoes.Let
the masalas cook until the tomatoes are mushy.Add in masoor(lentils) and potatoes.Mix
in well.Season with salt and a cup of water. cover and cook until the masoor
and potatoes are almost cooked.
Drain the water from the rice and add in to the masoor.Add in more salt as per taste,chopped
coriander leaves and water.The level of water should be just an inch above the
level of rice.Cook in medium high flame until it starts bubbling and water level
is almost same as the rice.Cover and lower the flame let it cook for another 15 or
so until rice is completely cooked.
Switch off the flame and let it sit for 5 more minutes.Serve immediately with
chilled cucumber raita.
